The dictionary defines “pupule” as crazy, wild, insane. Which is exactly how he plays his ukulele! 

Brian Vasquez, master ukulele player was born with an ukulele in his hand and music running through his veins. His career began at age 5, when his father, Phillip Vasquez asked Brian to share his stage at the Kona Inn, in the heart of Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Brian has been entertaining ever since.

Brian’s repertoire covers a broad range of styles, but he plays every piece with intense energy.  The list includes traditional Hawaiian music, Comtemporary Island Sounds, Oldies, Latin, Raggae and even touch of Rap, all played Brian Style!

Most people “listen” to music, when you hear Brian Style music, it will run through your veins too!

They’ll be on the Tropical Daze Smart & Final Main Stage at 12:30 on Saturday, July 21.  They’ll make your Tropical Daze experience a day to remember.

Whether dancing to the lively rhythms of the Caribbean or relaxing to the soothing sounds of the steel drum, you will feel the heat of the Tropical Beat Steel Drum Band!

Kua’ana has had the honor of sharing the stage with Fiji, The Makaha Sons, Sean Na’auao, Kapena, Keali’i Reichel, Ho’onu’a, Kalapana, C&K, and Ernie Cruz, Jr.

“Feels Like Home,” Kua’ana’s CD contains 12 originals, and kicks off with “U,” a love song with sweet harmonies and a light reggae beat. The title track has a fun bass line, and a catchy, “Oh, what a feeling,” hook.

“Wish,” a beautiful ballad, is featured on the popular “Hawaiian Style 3″ compilation and was a huge hit on the islands’ radio stations.

“Sway” is a crowd pleaser at the band’s live performances.

“Pass Da Poi” and “Nanakuli” bring Kua’ana back to their island roots.

Kua’ana will perform at Tropical Daze Summer Music Festival on Sunday, July 22 at 11:1oam and noon.

At age 14 he wrote the classic “Mr Moto” for his band The Belairs.  This was one of the first songs labeled “surf music” to hit the charts.  That same year (1962) he turned down an offer to join the Beach Boys.

Paul went on to play with the Hondells, Davie Allen and Sonny & Cher, among others.

He eventually took a break from performing and resurfaced in the 80s as part of the surf instrumental revival.  He made several albums during the period, some with his band, The Packards, and some as a solo virtuoso.  One of Paul’s guitars hangs in the Hard Rock Cafe.

He’s been playing with the Surfaris–the band that recorded “Wipeout”–since 1990.

Today Paul keeps busy with a variety of musical projects and maintains a really cool website (http://www.pjmoto.com/) where you can listen to lots of music for free.

This high energy tropical band captures the excitement, craziness, and joy of a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Coconut Telegraph plays all the Parrothead favorites: “Fins,” “Volcano,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” and of course “Margaritaville,” as well as the more obscure classics.

Bandleader Steve Stafford, who is a sailor and world traveler himself, has met Jimmy twice and is friends with several members of Jimmy’s band, the Corral Reefers, who occasionally join him onstage.

Coconut Telegraph has performed at Parrothead events all over the U.S., from Key West to California, and they are looking forward to bringing some “Caribbean Soul” to Tropical Daze Summer Music Festival 2012.
